Physical Therapy Q&A
What is physical therapy?
Physical therapy involves a vast array of techniques and modalities to decrease pain and restore mobility without drugs or invasive procedures. In addition to relieving pain, physical therapy can help reduce inflammation and increase strength, endurance, and range of motion.
As a skilled chiropractor, certified orthopedic physician assistant, and licensed and certified athletic trainer, Dr. Petersen has extensive experience using physical therapy techniques to treat people at NorthPark Neuropathy & Wellness.
His specialized sports medicine training has helped athletes of all levels, including Southern Methodist University’s athletic department.
What does physical therapy treat?
Physical therapy can treat a wide variety of medical conditions. Any type of musculoskeletal disorder can benefit from physical therapy, including back pain, neck pain, and carpal tunnel syndrome. At NorthPark Neuropathy & Wellness, Dr. Petersen also uses physical therapy to treat sports injuries like tennis elbow.
What are some physical therapy techniques?
Depending on your particular needs, Dr. Petersen may recommend one or more of the following physical therapies for your treatment plan:
Exercise
Dr. Petersen teaches you therapeutic stretching and strengthening exercises you can perform at home for continued improvement.
Ultrasound
Ultrasound uses high-frequency sound waves to apply deep heat to injured soft tissues, including muscle strains, ligaments sprains, and tendinitis.
Hot and cold
Moist heat or hot packs can increase circulation and relax muscles while ice reduces inflammation. Both treatments decrease pain.
Massage
There are many types of therapeutic massages, such as deep tissue, sports massage, and trigger point massage. These hands-on therapies involve kneading muscles to decrease pain and promote circulation.
Joint mobilization
Joint mobilization is a type of passive therapy, which means Dr. Petersen moves your body for you. He gently moves your joint in certain directions to relieve pain and improve mobility.
Interferential current therapy
Interferential current therapy (ICT) is a type of electrical stimulation that relieves pain and facilitates tissue healing. ICT is a noninvasive treatment that painlessly sends gentle electrical currents through your skin to the source of pain.
Laser therapy
At NorthPark Neuropathy & Wellness, Dr. Petersen uses a Multi Radiance cold laser to help injured tissues heal faster. Laser therapy is painless and takes only a few minutes.
