Spinal Decompression Q&A

What is spinal decompression therapy?

Nonsurgical spinal decompression therapy is a revolutionary treatment that utilizes a motorized traction table to stretch the spine. At Park Cities ChiroSport, Dr. Petersen uses the Triton DTS table to treat patients with ongoing back pain, neck pain, and referred pain like sciatica.

Unlike surgical spinal decompression procedures like laminectomy and microdiscectomy, spinal decompression therapy effectively relieves pain without causing any discomfort. The traction table gently stretches your spine, which releases pressure from your joints and tissues and enhances your body’s natural healing process.

What conditions can spinal decompression therapy treat?

At Park Cities ChiroSport, Dr. Petersen uses DTS spinal decompression therapy to treat various causes of neck pain and back pain, such as:

  • Degenerative disc disease
  • Herniated discs
  • Facet syndrome
  • Spinal stenosis
  • Postsurgical pain
  • Pinched nerves
  • Sciatica

In general, spinal decompression therapy isn’t recommended for pregnant women, or people with severe osteoporosis, obesity, or nerve damage. People who have had spine surgery with instrumentation like metal screws and plates also shouldn’t undergo DTS therapy.

Dr. Petersen evaluates each patient on an individual basis.

How effective is spinal decompression therapy?

Nonsurgical spinal decompression therapy offers similar results to surgical procedures. About 70% of people experience satisfactory pain relief from spinal decompression therapy.

How does spinal decompression therapy work?

Spinal decompression therapy restores proper function to an injured disc. During a treatment, you lie, fully clothed, on a table that’s connected to a computer. Dr. Petersen attaches a padded harness that focuses gentle force along your spine. He programs the computer to decompress your spine according to your specific needs.

As the table stretches your spine, it creates a vacuum effect in your spinal discs. The vacuum causes any herniated disc material to go back inside the disc, relieving any pressure on pinched nerves. The vacuum also simulates healing and blood flow to the area.

Each session includes spinal decompression therapy and stabilization exercises. In total, the appointment takes about an hour. Most people benefit from spinal decompression therapy 3-5 times a week for several weeks.
